Sailing Home

Commissioned by the Upper Hunter Shire Kia Ora Music festival in 2010, Sailing Home is a dedication to Jessica Watson. At just 16 years of age, Jessica Watson is the youngest person to sail solo non-stop and unassisted around the World. On January 25, 2011 she was awarded the prestigious Young Australian of the Year title. In January 2012, Jessica was announced in the Australia Day Honours list, receiving an OAM (Order of Australia Medal) for services to sailing and being a role model for the youth of Australia.

The piece is full of rousing melodies and meaningful lyrics and is an empowering piece for teenage girls to sing. Many of the lyrical ideas were inspired by Jessica’s book and diary.

Lyrics

S A I L I N G H O M E

By Paul Jarman

Sunshine glowing, water sparkling
Birds are circling, dolphins splashing
Looking out far across the ocean
Never felt so free

Trade wind blowing, rigging waving
Ella’s Pink Lady proudly gliding
See the day through happy glasses
Time is flying by

Believe in yourself, never give up
What ever it takes follow your dream

Never tire of starry nights
Sleeping outside in the moonlight
Waking up to the colours of sunrise
Sea spray in my hair

Only the moment, the rising and falling
Music playing, horizon calling
Singing out loud to the wide blue world
Feeling so alive

Thunder, lightning, waves come crashing down
Tall dark mountains, white faces, cold frown
Facing fear I find my bravery
I can weather this storm

Every knock down I grow stronger
Every squall, I rise above her
Every challenge thrown upon me
I will overcome

No more days and nights alone
No more sunsets on my own
I will never forget, I will return
I am sailing home
